I was selected, together with Kerris Casey-st.Pierre from Spiral Designs, by the Canal and River Trust for a commission of a canal-side public sculpture at Newton Heath in Manchester, back in September. The sculpture is to be "nature themed" in order to make visitors and the local community more aware of the biodiversity of the canal environment.
I decided to celebrate the wildlife that is so easily overlooked: the minibeasts and the creatures underneath the water surface.
This is a paper design of some reeds that would allow the dragonflies or fish to be raised high above the ground, and thus visible from the canal itself and out of reach. proposed height: 4m.
sadly we realised that the reeds - this close together- would make climbing up rather too easy!
